Madeira Airport (FNC)

Madeira Airport (FNC) is one of the most famous airports in the world, thanks to its runway built on pillars over the ocean. It's a small, efficient airport that handles most visitors to the island.

Overview

The airport sits on the east coast of Madeira, about 19 km from Funchal centre. It handles around 4 million passengers a year, with most traffic coming from European cities. See our Where is Madeira? guide for location details.

Terminal 1 handles most flights. Terminal 2 (the older terminal) is used by some budget airlines. Both are small and easy to navigate.

The Famous Runway

The runway extension, completed in 2000, is built on 180 pillars over the ocean. It's 2,781 m long and is considered one of the most impressive engineering achievements in aviation.

Pilots who land here undergo special training due to crosswinds and the approach over the water. It looks dramatic, but it's been operating safely for over two decades.

The Landing

If you want the best view during landing, sit on the left side of the plane. You'll fly along the coast, over the ocean, and then touch down on the runway extension. It's one of the most scenic approaches in the world.

Getting from the Airport

Aerobus

The Aerobus (Line 1) runs every 20 minutes between the airport and Funchal centre. The journey takes about 25 minutes. Tickets cost around €5 and can be bought on the bus or at the machine in arrivals.

Public Bus

Bus Line 20 connects the airport to Funchal. It's cheaper than the Aerobus but takes longer. Useful if you're heading to the east side of the island.

Taxi

Taxis are available outside arrivals. The ride to central Funchal costs €20–25 and takes about 20 minutes. Taxis are metered.

Car Hire

Major companies (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt) and local firms have desks in arrivals. Book ahead in peak season — prices increase significantly in July and August.

Delays and Disruptions

Madeira Airport can close temporarily in strong winds or fog. This is rare but worth knowing — build buffer time into your travel plans, especially for early morning departures.

If your flight is delayed, the terminal has limited seating and food options. Passengers sometimes queue outside during peak disruption periods.

Airlines and Destinations

TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, Lufthansa, Condor and Transavia serve Madeira from various European cities. Routes vary by season — more destinations are available in summer.
